Our client is a leading international tobacco company, holding a 15.5% share of the global tobacco market outside the United States. Its cigarette brands are sold in over 180 countries worldwide.

OBJECTIVE

The client expected the enhancement of the existing Power BI report “BOS” and the development of additional reports for various business areas. In the longer term, the goal was to build a comprehensive reporting system integrated with their production application.  The client already had a “BOS” production report in place, which was shared with our team. Our first task was to familiarize ourselves with the report’s structure, analyze the underlying data, and assess whether optimization and redesign were necessary.

Following our analysis, Algomine decided to optimize and remodel the report.

OUR APPROACH

Our approach began with gathering all necessary requirements for the upcoming reports, taking into account potential development paths—ensuring that one unified data model could support multiple reports powered by the same dataflows. Most of the reports were improved and enhanced on an ongoing basis, adapting to evolving business needs. We introduced daily meetings with the “Application Team” and later dedicated daily standups for the Power BI team.

We also implemented two-week sprints to review progress and plan ahead.

Additionally, our Project Manager actively participated in a bi-weekly BI meeting, co-hosted with the project’s Product Owner.

OUR SOLUTION

Following our analysis, Algomine decided to optimize and remodel the report.

Subsequently, the need for a new report titled “RMKMS” emerged, covering a different business area. The client provided technical and graphical specifications, including necessary visualizations and data.

This report was continuously developed throughout the project, with new data and tabs being added over time. Derivative reports were also created as part of this evolution.

Next, a Power BI roadmap was created and coordinated by the Algomine team, with the goal of establishing a reporting system for all components of the client’s production application.

At this stage, our working model shifted. We began conducting “requirement gathering” sessions and held regular meetings with business stakeholders to understand how different modules were used. The client also shared working reports from other areas for reference.

Based on these meetings, we developed proofs of concept and mock-ups for individual modules, leading to a comprehensive reporting solution for the entire production application.

Our Key Responsibilities were as follows:

  • Optimization and restructuring of the data model in the “BOS” report
  • Engaging with business stakeholders to gather requirements
  • Designing data models and building reports for selected business areas
  • Maintaining existing business reports (implementing fixes and processing client requests)

RESULTS AND IMPACT

The client expressed satisfaction with the solution provided by Algomine. Initially, they had only one low-quality report. We not only optimized that report, but ultimately delivered a system comprising 7–8 fully functional business reports across different domains.

These reports were deployed in production, provided critical operational insights to hundreds of users, and were distributed across all company branches.

The client appreciated the clarity, speed, and intuitiveness of the new reports—hallmarks of a well-designed Power BI solution.
